Oddball The Great
Icon Saperavi 2019 - NEW VINTAGE
The world’s oldest winemaking grape, Saperavi, contains all of the majesty and power you would expect for it to have survived for so many millennia. Intensely coloured, even the word Saperavi means ‘dye’ in its Eastern European homeland. The moonless-midnight tint is just the first hint of the amazing depth of flavour this wine carries – truly something Great!

Winemaker's Notes
There’s a bravery in embracing big and this is a wine where everything towers tall. The darkest fraction of a wine leaves the winepress last – loaded with enormous amounts of all of the characters that make a wine great – and we took only of this fraction and aged it in 100% new oak barrels. A lesser wine would be flooded by that much barrel; only the great can take it.

Bouquet & Palate
Raspberry and blackberry bloom in the shadow of an old oak. Ripening in the light let through by the great boughs. Notes too of the forest floor; damp earth and oyster mushrooms. With time to think the glass emits lighter spicier aromatics; fennel fronds, cumin, cardamon, pomegranate molasses, and earthy field beets. There’s an elegance to the muscularity of the palate, poise too to the punch. The wash of fruit boxed by fine lines of firm tannin. Time will work magic on this wine if patience will allow it.

Food Match
This is not a wine built for fish or fine white sauces, lift your game with game, foraged mushrooms and butter; lots of butter.
